Recycle old clothing at H&M stores and get a 15% discount

June 16, 2013 by caroline

H&M (worldwide) has partnered up with I:Collect to recycle old clothing of ANY BRAND and in ANY CONDITION.

Clothing in decent condition will be resold while the rest while be recycled into new products such as cloths and car insulation.

Customers donating clothing will receive a 15% discount coupon.

Don’t let fashion go to waste

Every year, tons of textiles end up in landfills. But as much as 95% of these textiles and clothes could be used again. That’s why we are now collecting clothes in our stores. Clothes of any brand, in any quality and any condition.

If you’ve got something worn, torn or hopelessly out of style – don’t throw it away or let it pile up in the back of your wardrobe. Bring it to us and help reduce the amount of fashion being wasted.

Bring your unwanted clothes to any H&M store. For each bag of clothes you hand in, you will receive a £5 voucher to redeem on your next purchase of £30 or more.

Your clothes are sent with our usual deliveries to the nearest processing plant. The clothes are then graded and hand-sorted. Zero waste is the goal. Items that are too worn and torn to be reused will be recycled and turned into raw materials and new products.

Rewear - Clothing that can be worn again is marketed worldwide as second-hand goods.

Reuse -Textiles that are no longer suitable to wear are converted into other products, such as cleaning cloths.

Recycle -Textiles that can’t be reused get a new chance as textile fibres, or are used to manufacture products such as damping and insulating materials for the auto industry.

Energy -When rewear, reuse and recycle are not options, textiles are used to produce energy.

Why is H&M doing this?

We want to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry by limiting the amount of waste ending up in landfills.

Can I hand in clothes in any H&M store?

During the roll-out phase selected stores will be able to collect clothes. You can find these stores in our Store Locator atwww.hm.com/longlivefashion.

Will you only accept H&M garments?

Of course not. Any piece of clothing, of any brand, and in any condition is welcome.

What can I hand in?

To start off, we only accept clothing.

Is there a limit for how much I can hand in?

Each customer can hand in a maximum of two shopping bags of clothes every day.

How much is the reward?

You will receive one voucher redeemable on your next purchase for each shopping bag of clothes you bring in.

Why have you chosen I:CO as your partner?

I:CO has a reliable product and system that we have evaluated and experienced in a successful pilot project. I:CO provides the infrastructure for closing the loop in which your unwanted clothes are repeatedly reprocessed and made available for new use.

Does H&M profit from the returned garments?

No. Our revenues will be used to reward our customers, to make donations to local charity organisations and to invest in recycling innovation.

For each kilogram of clothes we collect, 0.02 EUR* will be donated to a local charity organisation chosen by H&M.

Wow, this is a fantastic idea! I’m going to let my sister know about this program, she is always cleaning out her closet and throwing out clothes that could definitely be put to better use.

  2. Erika E says:

That’s a great way to encourage people to donate their clothes instead of throwing them out. It’s pretty great that they’re also going to recycle the clothes that aren’t in good enough shape to give to someone to wear.
